Lampedusa is Italy's southernmost island, closer to Tunisia than to Sicily. The sea is clear, the cliffs are low and pale, and the coves have names like Cala Tabaccara and Cala Pulcino.
The island is also a place of welcome for many migrants who have arrived from the sea, and this story is part of its identity. Visitors meet fishermen and families bound to the sea.
In the nature reserve, on Rabbit Beach, the Caretta caretta lays its eggs. The Sanctuary of the Madonna di Porto Salvo is a pilgrimage destination.
- Always accessible
- 2-3 days
- Free entry
- June to September
- The roads are paved but the coves require paths or a boat.
- Book the ferry or flight in advance in summer. For the loveliest coves take a boat: many can only be reached from the sea. Access to Rabbit Beach is regulated: find out beforehand.
