Taormina, ME
Taormina is a town perched above the Ionian Sea, with Etna as a backdrop. From above you see the coast, the bays and, on clear days, the volcano with its plume.
The centre runs along Corso Umberto, the pedestrian street linking Porta Messina to Porta Catania, with shops, cafés and stone palaces. You pass through Piazza IX Aprile, a balcony open to the sea, and the Clock Tower.
The Ancient Theatre is its most famous attraction, but the town also deserves an aimless stroll, among gardens, glimpses and workshops.
- Always accessible
- Half a day or 1 day
- Free entry
- Spring and autumn; in summer it is very crowded
- Corso Umberto is pedestrian and almost flat; the side streets go uphill.
- Arrive early in the morning or after dinner to avoid the crowds. Parking in the centre is difficult: leave your car in the car parks outside the centre.
