Vucciria Market

Palermo, PA
The Vucciria is Palermo's historic market, once the largest in the city. The name recalls the French boucherie, butcher's shop, and in Sicilian it also means confusion: for centuries it has been a place of shouting voices and stalls of meat, fish and fruit.
Renato Guttuso made it famous with his great painting La Vucciria, from 1974. Today there are fewer stalls, but it remains a lively area, with narrow streets around Piazza Caracciolo.
In the evening the area turns into a nightlife spot, with street food and music. By day it is a good place to understand how people ate in Palermo.
- Streets always accessible; the market stalls work mostly in the morning
- 1 hour
- Free entry
- All year; in the evening for the nightlife
- Narrow streets, uneven in places.
- By day there are still a few stalls; in the evening the area comes alive with bars and street food. Watch your bags and phones at busy times.
